In Richard Strauss’s Alpine Symphony, I hear the very essence of our own existence. The radiant sunrise becomes a symbol of human birth; the ascent up the mountain an image of our own growth – sustained by hope, strength and curiosity. The obstacles along the way mirror life’s trials. At the summit, we stand for a moment in full awareness of ourselves – clarity, grandeur, fulfilment. The storm breaks in like the unpredictable, shaping and shaking us.
